Meritxell Rovira és llicenciada en biologia (2001) per l’Universitat de Barcelona i doctora en Ciències de la Salut i de la Vida (2007) per l'Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Durant la seva tesis doctoral va treballar en la diferenciació de cél•lules mare embrionaries de ratolí a cél•lules acinars pancreátiques sota la supervisió d’Anouchka Skoudy y F.X. Real.

Després del seu doctorat va marxar a EEUU al 2008 com investigadora potdoctoral a Johns Hopkins/School of Medicine als laboratorios de Steven D Leach i Mike Parsons, on va adquirir experiència en l’estudi de progenitors pancreàtics adults en models animals de ratolí i peix cebra. Va tornar a Barcelona al 2011 amb una beca postdocroral Marie Curie per treballar al laboratori de Jorge Ferrer (IDIBAPS) a on va adquirir experiència en el camp de l’epigenética. Després dels seus estudis postdoctorals es va unir al laboratori de la Núria López-Bigas a l’IRB com investigadors associada per establir i supervisar el laboratori experimental del grup de la Núria.

Es va incorporar al CMR[B] al 2017 després d’haver obtingut una beca de Jóvenes Investigadores del Ministeri. El projecte que desenvoluparà al CMR[B] estudiarà els canvis transcripcionals i epigenétics que tenen lloc entre progenitors ductals embrionaris i ductes adults, per identificar els mecanismes que restringeixen les capacitats progenitors de les cél•lules ductals.
