Ángel Raya, Director of the CMR[B], and Anna Veiga, Director of the Stem Cell Bank of Barcelona (BLCB), located at CMRB, have earned the Award of Honour Dr. Benaprès 2016 for their scientific career, awarded by the Spanish Society of Cosmetic Medicine and Surgery (SEMCC).
The "Doctor Benaprès" awards have been granted for eight years, in the context of the “Mediterranean Conference: Therapeutic Confrontations in Cosmetic Medicine & Surgery” to reward individuals or research institutions in the field of Regenerative Medicine and Physiological Aging. These conferences are held in the coastal city of Sitges with the support of the city council and this will be their 34th edition. Dr. Benaprès, was a physician, politician and publicist. During his period as a Major of Sitges, at the beginning of the 20th century, he spurred the major improvements for this population, enjoying at the same time the friendship with artists such as Santiago and Rusiñol and Ramon Casas.
Among the recipients of the award in previous years, there are Bernat Soria (2009), leading researcher in embryonic stem cells and ex Minister of Health; Rita Levi-Montalcini (2010), Nobel Prize in Medicine for her work on the growth factors; María Blasco (2011), telomere researcher and Director of the Spanish Cancer Research Centre; and Manel Esteller (2014), Director of Epigenetics and Cancer Biology Program at the IDIBELL.
The award ceremony took place at the Hall of Gold at Palace Maricel in Sitges, on Thursday May 5th at 7 pm. Then, on Friday May 6th at 11am, they both offered a master lecture about the research on iPS cells and their clinical application.
